Sifu Tylus Quan Do
Tylus Quan Do was born in Saigon in 1975 at the end of the Vietnam War. Even though martial arts movies were forbidden in Vietnam, Quan was inspired to learn martial arts after hearing the movie stories of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan in the early 1980’s. “My parents never permitted me to start martial arts when I was young as they were afraid it would stunt my growth”. Finally in 1990, he started individual sports, wrestling, weight-lifting and fitness shortly after moving to the United States. Choi Kwon Do (a Korean-American martial art specialized in rapid bent-joints attacks and defenses) was the first martial art Quan attempted, but short lived as it quickly became an expensive commercialized ordeal.
In March of 2000, “Bert Hill, a Wing Chun Gung Fu instructor, after 3 years of searching for a dedicated student and training partner found me in a gym practicing kickboxing on a heavy bag, and from that point on my non-stop martial arts journey begins…”. After 6 intensive months of one-on-one training, Bert introduced Quan to his instructor, Sifu Wayne Jackson (CRCA Wing Chun, Head Instructor of Maryland, USA). Sifu Wayne, being a 30 year veteran in Mixed Martial Arts, introduced and expanded Quan’s training in Jeet Kune Do – Muay Thai – Western Boxing – Savate – Kali – Escrima in addition to the mother art of Wing Chun Gung Fu. Throughout the years Quan frequently visit and learns directly at the home of Sifu Randy Williams, Founder of Close Range Combat Academy, where he became a personal friend and dedicated student of Sifu Williams. He is the CRCA Instructor Representative for Spain and CRCA Webmaster
In June 2001, Ron Hebb, Director of Fitness for the United States Marine Corp in Virginia, a senior classmate and close friend hosted a spectacular seminar instructed by Guro/Sifu Cass Magda in Arlington, Virginia U.S.A. Shortly after, Ronnie and Quan went to Magda Institute in Reseda, California based upon an invitation by Guro Cass Magda, founder of Magda Institute, to try out the classes and they both fell in love head-over-heel with all these combat arts. Since 2006 Quan extensively practices and teaches the CRCA Wing Chun and actively pursues the Magda Institute curriculum (Buka Jalan Silat-Jeet Kune Do-FMA-Muay Thai) while integrating his own unique approach of Wing Chun and Buka Jalan Silat theories and principles.
In 2009 Quan started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Coach Pedro Schmall, a black belt under Royler Gracie. Consequently at the beginning of 2010, Quan started attending the Inosanto Academy, School of the Successor of Bruce Lee, to expand further into the grappling arts including Shooto, Machado BJJ, MMA and cross-training experience. With the generous help and referral by Guro Daniel Lonero of Inosanto Academy, Quan was blessed by Guro Dan Inosanto with two instructor certifications of Apprentice Instructor for the art of Jeet Kune Do and Lakan Guro in Filipino Kali in March of 2014.
On the Yin side of things, Quan is a dedicated practitioner of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Chi Kung and Vipassana Meditation since 2007.
